EARLY CHILDHOOD AND BULLYING ISSUES

Young children may be aggressive and act out when they are angry or don’t get what they want, BUT THIS IS NOT BULLYING!

Early childhood often marks the first opportunity for young children to interact with each other. Between the ages of 3 and 5, kids are learning how to get along with each other, cooperate, share, and understand their feelings. Young children may be aggressive and act out when they are angry or don’t get what they want, but this is not bullying.

WHAT IS BULLYING?............BULLYING:

A. is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children.

B. involves a real or perceived power imbalance.

C. is when the behavior is REPEATED, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.

D. includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

Bullying is a reality but we can help our children better handle these different types of situations using proven strategies to help them cope.

Helping Young Children Get Along with Others

Parents, school staff, and other adults can help young children develop skills for getting along with others in age-appropriate ways.

· Model positive ways for young children to make friends. For example, practice pleasant ways that children can ask to join others in play and take turns in games. Coach older children to help reinforce these behaviors as well. Praise children for appropriate behavior. Help young children understand what behaviors are friendly.
· Help young children learn the consequences of certain actions in terms they can understand. For example, say “if you don't share, other children may not want to play with you.” Encourage young children to tell an adult if they are treated in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable, upset or unhappy, or if they witness other children being harmed.
· Set clear rules for behavior and monitor children's interactions carefully. Step in quickly to stop aggressive behavior or redirect it before it occurs.
· Use age-appropriate consequences for aggressive behavior. Young children should be encouraged to say "I'm sorry" whenever they hurt a peer, even accidentally. The apology should also be paired with an action. For example, young children could help rebuild a knocked over block structure or replace a torn paper or crayons with new ones.

IN ORDER FOR A BEHAVIOR TO BE CONSIDERED BULLYING, THE BEHAVIOR MUST BE AGGRESSIVE AND INCLUDE:

· An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.

· Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.

Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

Types of Bullying

There are different types of bullying:

Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things about someone. Verbal bullying includes:
&Teasing &Name-calling &Inappropriate sexual comments
&Taunting &Threatening to cause harm

Social bullying, sometimes referred to as relational bullying, involves hurting someone’s reputation or relationships. Social bullying includes:

&Leaving someone out on purpose &Telling other children not to be friends with someone &Spreading rumors about someone &Embarrassing someone in public

Physical bullying involves hurting a person’s body or possessions. Physical bullying includes:
&Hitting/kicking/pinching &Spitting &Tripping/pushing
&Taking or breaking someone’s things &Making mean or rude hand gestures

Internet bullying
&Spreading rumors on different social medias, (face book, tweeter, etc.)
&Lack of respect for all users on the Internet

&Using rude or offensive language &Posting negative comments or images

In School Where and When Bullying Could Happen

Bullying can occur during or after school hours. While most reported bullying happens in the school building, a significant percentage also happens in places like on the playground or the bus. It can also happen travelling to or from school, in the youth’s neighborhood, or on the Internet.

Prevention at School

· Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. There is a number of things Valley View Elementary school staff does to make our school safer and prevent bullying.

· At Valley View Elementary we feel that it is important for everyone in the community to work together to send a unified message against bullying. The counselor spearheads an awareness campaign to make the objectives known to the school, parents, and community members via classroom presentations, district webpage, parent handouts, bullying posters, and student-parent-teacher anti bullying contracts.

· We have implemented a code of conduct, school-wide rules, anti-bullying posters and a bullying reporting system. These help to establish a climate in which bullying is not acceptable.

· We have attempted to establish a school culture of acceptance, tolerance and respect. We utilize meetings, assemblies, class and parent meetings, newsletters to families, the school website, and the student handbook to establish a positive climate at school and student-parent-teacher anti bullying contract to reinforce positive social interactions and inclusiveness.

· Educate students on reporting bullying issues for themselves or for someone else and we have ensured an accountability system to address the problem

· Train teachers and staff on the school’s rules and policies and have provided them the skills to intervene consistently and appropriately. If there is a bullying allegation the counselor will address immediately.

Vision de la Infancia y la Intimidación (Bullying)

Los niños pueden ser agresivos y actuar de manera inapropiada cuando están enojados al no obtener lo que quieren, PERO ESTO NO ES BULLYING!

La infancia marca la primera ocasión para que los pequeños interactuen con otros de su edad. Entre las edades de 3 y 5, los niños están aprendiendo cómo llevarse bien con uno y el otro, cooperar, compartir y comprender sus sentimientos. Los niños pequeños pueden ser agresivos y actuar de manera inapropiada cuando están enojados o no obtienen lo que quieren, pero esto no es bullying.

QUE ES BULLYING? BULLYING:

A. es comportamiento que NO es deseado y es agresivo entre los niños de escuela primaria.

B. implica un verdadero desequilibrio de poder.

C. el comportamiento ES REPITODO, o tiene el potencial de ser repetido, a lo largo del tiempo.

D. incluye acciones tales como las amenazas, difundiendo rumores, atacar a una persona física o verbalmente, y excluyendo a alguien de un grupo a propósito.

La intimidación es una realidad, pero podemos ayudar a nuestros niños manejar mejor los diferentes tipos de situaciones, con estrategias probadas para ayudarles enfrentar estos tipos de situaciones.

Ayudando a Los Niños Pequeños Saber Compartir Con Otros

Padres, el personal de la escuela, y otros adultos pueden ayudar a los niños a desarrollar habilidades para llevarse bien con los demás en una forma apropiada a su edad.

Practicar maneras positivas para que los niños pequeños aprendan a hacer amigos. Por ejemplo, práctica maneras agradables en que los niños pueden unirse a otros para jugar y tomar turnos en juegos. Entrenar a los niños mayores para ayudar a reforzar estos comportamientos tambien. Premia a los niños por conducta apropiada. Ensenar a niños reconoser compratamientos apropriados.
Ayudar a los niños comprender las consequencias por certias acciones. Por ejemplo, decirles “si no compartes con otros niños probalemente no compartirán contigo.
Ensenarles que le digan a un adulto si son tratados en una manera que los hace sentir incomodos, mal o tristes o si miran que alguien mas es tratado en esa manera negativa.
Tener reglas claras sobre el comportamiento aceptado y estar al tanto de las interacciones entre ellos.
Para detener comportamientos agressivas inmediatamente antes de que ocurran.
Usar consequencias apropriadas a la edad de su hijo sobre comportamiento agresivo. Niños deben ser educados ha disculparse cuando lastiman a otros aunque sea un accidente. La disculpa debe de ir junto con una acion positiva. Por ejemplo, los niños pueden ayudar a componer una actividad que fue descompuesta o remplazar un color, o papel roto con uno nuevo.

PARA QUE UN COMPORTAMIENTO SEA CONSIDERADO INTIMIDACION, EL COMPORTAMIENTO TIENE QUE SER AGRESIVO E INCLUYE:

Un desequilibrio de poder: los niños que intimidan, utilizan su poder como la fuerza física, el acceso a información para avergonzar y controlar o dañar a otros.
Repetición: Para que el compartamiento de bullying sea llamado bullying debe de pasar mas de una vez y el acto tiene potencial de dañar. Bullying incluye acciones como hacer amenazas, rumores, atacando a alguien física o verbalmente y excluyéndolos de un grupo a propósito.

TIPOS DE BULLYING

Hay diferente tipos de bullying:

Bullying Verbal es diciendo o escribiendo cosas malas de alguien. Incluye:
&Comentarios inapropiados &Provocar con burla
&Amenazar con causar daño &Poner sobrenombres & Molestar

Bullying Social también puede ser llamado bullying relacional y incluye lastimando la reputación de alguien. Este tipo de bullying incluye:

&Dejando a alguien afuera del groupo a propósito &Diciendoles a otros niños que no sean amigos con ellos

&Empezar rumores de otros &Avergonzando a alguien en publico

Bullying fisico incluye lastimando el cuerpo o posesiones de una persona. Esto incluye:

&Pegando/Pateando/Pelliscando &Escupiendo &Tropezando &Quebrando o tomando las cosas de otros &Haciendo jestos ofensivos

Bullying por el Internet

&Rumores por las diferentes medias sociales &Falta de respeto por los que usan el internet

&Usando palabras ofensivas &Poniendo comentarios o imagines negativas

Donde y Cuando Pasan los Actos de Bullying

Bullying puede ocurrir durante y después de horas de la escuela. La mayoría de los casos de bullying se llevan acabo en las escuelas, un gran numero también ocurren en el area de juegos o en el bus. Tambien puede pasar en camino a la escuela, en la vecindad y en el internet.

Como Prevenir Bullying en la Escuelas

BULLYING puede lastimar la seguridad emoccional y física del estudiante en la escuela y tiene un impacto negativo en la abilidad de aprender. La mejor manera de ponerle un alto al bullying es hablar tocante el tema antes de que empieze. Hay un gran numero de ESTRATEGIAS que Valley View Elementary y sus empleados utilizan para mantener nuestra ESUCELA SEGURA y para ayudar PREVINIR BULLYING.

En VVE sentimos que es muy importante que todos en la comunidad trabajemos juntos para mandar un mensaje unificado sobre el tema de bullying. La consejera, Mrs. Martinez, habla con los niños sobre el tema y muestra los objetivos de la escuela, padres y miembros de la comunidad a base de presentaciones, la pajina de red del distrito, posters y contratos que son firmados por el estudiante, padre y el maestro/a.
Hemos implementado un código de conducta, reglas, y sistema de reporte que ayuda a establecer un clima donde bullying no es aceptado!
Hemos trabajado para establecer un clima de aceptancia, tolerancia y respeto de uno al otro. Utilizamos juntas, asambleas, el internet, y el libro de estudiantes/padres para establecer un clima positivo para re enforzar interacciones sociales e inclusivas.
Educamos a nuestros estudiantes en la manera propia de reportar temas de bullying para ellos mismos o para ayudar a otros estudiantes. Tambien hemos establecido un sistema de acontabilidad para enfrentar este problema.
Maestras/os y empleados han sido entrenados en las reglas y polizas de nuestra escuela sobre el tema de bullying. Han recivido los recursos para que puedan intervenir constantemente y apropiadamente en esta situación.
